Renewable Energy Sources

Home / Distribution / Renewable Energy Sources

On this page you can find all the information regarding Renewable Energy Source (RES) Systems. Applications regarding RES Systems can be found in this link.

RES-E HOSTING CAPACITY

RES-E Hosting Capacity is the maximum RES capacity that can be installed at transmission substation level. It is presented in the Hosting Capacity Map that has been created by both Distribution System Operator (DSO) and Transmission System Operator of Cyprus (TSOC) as part of the Cyprus Transmission and Distribution System Redesign Study for 2021-2030, prepared as per the Cyprus Regulatory Authority Decision 02/2019. It aims to provide useful information to whom it may concern with regards to the RES-E integration capability of the Cyprus Power System.

Hosting Capacity Map is essentially a tool that geographically illustrates the RES-E Hosting Capacity per Transmission Substation. Also, the RES-E Available Hosting Capacity is presented, i.e. the remaining available RES-E integration capability, which results by subtracting the already installed    RES-E systems from the overall Hosting Capacity. It should be noted that systems that have already signed the preliminary connection terms are considered as installed.

Caution should be raised in that all information presented in the Hosting Capacity Map are indicative and non-binding for connection approval by the DSO or the TSOC, as each connection request is assessed individually and several other factors are taken into consideration. In particular, Hosting Capacity in this framework is evaluated based only on technical criteria, therefore other factors e.g. land availability are not taken into consideration. Finally, it should be noted that RES-E connection at a substation with high Available Hosting Capacity does not necessarily guarantee a faster connection implementation.

Both System Operators are disposing their active grids to any and all participants or potential participants of the Electricity Market, with full transparency and equal treatment, heading altogether towards a successful energy transition.

(Please note that the information is currently only available in Greek)

Following CERA’s Regulatory Decision 189/2023, the DSO is obliged to submit to the Market Operator (MO) the monthly curtailed energy for each RES System connected to the Distribution grid. The monthly data of curtailed energy per RES System will be used for the application of the charge tolerance limit in case of non-compliance with the deviation of energy absorption from the absolute value of the net position of a RES Producer.

The calculation of the monthly curtailed energy per RES System is estimated based on a methodology designed by the DSO and approved by CERA. A detailed description of this methodology is provided in Annex A (available only in Greek)

The monthly data of curtailed energy per RES System connected to the Distribution grid will be dispatched to the MO by the 14th of each month

The need for limiting the electricity generation from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) arises from the undeniable necessity to ensure the stable and safe operation of the Transmission and/or the Distribution Network. Moreover, according to the Transmission and Distribution Grid Code in force, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) and/or the Distribution System Operator (DSO) reserve the right to limit (at any time and without restriction) the renewable energy fed into the Transmission or in the Distribution System in order to safeguard the stable and safe operation of the Cyprus Electric System.

The reduction of the RES generation is carried out by the two Operators using specialised tools and algorithms to ensure, to the maximum extent possible, the fair allocation of the curtailment to all RES units connected to the Transmission and/or the Distribution System.

You can read the Curtailment Procedure for Photovoltaic (PV) Generation in the Distribution System by clicking here.

In the image below historical statistical data are given for disconnections of small scale PV systems connected to the Distribution Network including the Type of Control employed, the PV Group disconnected as well as the number of disconnections that have taken place during the last 30 days.

It is important to note that with the continuous increase of PV Systems, the prosumer allocation in the groups below is subject to change.

Daily RES curtailment reports carried out by the DSO are given below

When a critical technical problem and/or deviation occurs in a RES-E Generation Unit or an MV Private Network, the DSO is obliged to act accordingly to ensure the security and reliability of the Distribution Network. The detected problems are classified into one of the following three categories based on how they affect the safety and reliability of the Distribution Network:

i) Category 1: Problems that pose an immediate risk to the security and reliability of the Distribution Network and shall be treated immediately.

ii) Category 2: Problems that impact the real-time operational management of the Distribution Network and can endanger the reliability of the Power System.

iii) Category 3: Less significant technical problems and/or discrepancies that adversely affect the real-time operational management of the Distribution Network.

After classifying the detected technical problems, the DSO issues escalating notifications to the Network User. According to the Transmission-Distribution Rules, the Network User is obliged to take immediate actions to rectify the detected problem and then inform the DSO for verification purposes.

If the detected technical problem and/or deviations are corrected, the DSO informs the Network User accordingly. Otherwise, and after the completion of the escalating notifications, the DSO is obliged to disconnect the RES-E Generation Unit or the MV Private Network from the Distribution Grid for security and reliability purposes. The RES-E Generation Unit or the MV Private Network will remain disconnected until the restoration of the technical problem and/or deviation.
