Environment

Home / Electricity Authority of Cyprus / Management System / Environment

EAC, by having as goal the development of its business activities in harmony with the society and the environment, has proceeded with the setting of an environmental policy, which has been approved by the General Manager. The Authority applies the Environmental Management Standard CYS EN ISO14001: 2004, which covers all the activities except of those of the power plants and is fully interconnected with the Quality Management Standard CYS EN ISO9001:2008. The waste management is done through the relevant Waste Management Process and our partners Green Dot, WEEE Electrocyclosis Ltd, AFIS and Telli.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

EAC recognizes that energy sources are not inexhaustible and for this reason they must be used responsibly. Therefore, its contribution to the protection of the environment has two dimensions, internal and external. The internal dimension refers to the effort for reducing the environmental impact of its action. The external dimension refers to the effort for increasing the environmental awareness of its customers, as well as to strengthen actions outside EAC that have to do with the overall preservation of the environment for future generations.

To meet this goal, an Environmental Management System has begun to apply, which is compliant with European Regulation EMAS.

EAC administration is committed for the continuing implementation of the Environmental Management System, as well as for its continuous improvement, the compliance with the applicable international and national regulations and codes of conduct, which concern the operation and the taking of preventive and corrective measures for preventing the deterioration of the internal and external environment.

The continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System will be accomplished by reviewing and revising both this and the targets established.

IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF RELEVANT ISSUES

The identification and evaluation of the consequences to the environment, as a result of EAC’s activities has been carried out, taking into account the severity and probability of each action. Preventive actions have been decided so as to minimize these consequences.

IDENTIFICATION OF LEGAL ISSUES

The EAC has identified all its legal obligations and has documented them. Compliance with all laws and regulations is validated during internal audits.

ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AND TARGETS

For each geographical area, environmental indicators and targets have been set. In addition, action plans have been decided, which include all necessary actions to be taken, so as to meet the targets set.

DEALING WITH URGENT SITUATIONS

All environmental hazards as a consequence of urgent situations have been identified and the relevant contingency plans have been prepared for all geographical locations. Regular training is carried out to all specified personnel.
