EAC and the Ministry of Defence sign agreement for the Installation of LED Lighting in National Guard Camps

On 6 July 2026, a new Agreement was signed between the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and the Ministry of Defence, under which the EAC will undertake the supply, installation, and eight-year maintenance of approximately 4,400 LED lighting fixtures. These will replace an equal number of existing High-Pressure Sodium luminaires in National Guard camps across Cyprus.

The agreement forms part of the EAC’s strategy to enhance energy efficiency and achieve its annual energy-saving targets for the benefit of end consumers. It also supports the Ministry of Defence’s policy on energy conservation and the adaptation of National Guard activities through the implementation of policies and actions that respect and protect the environment, while maintaining the operational readiness of the National Guard.

This energy upgrade is not merely a technical intervention. It represents a meaningful investment in improving the quality of nighttime lighting within National Guard camps, while also making a significant contribution to reducing electricity consumption, which is expected to exceed 65% compared to the existing lighting installations.

Beyond the economic benefits, the project also carries a strong environmental dimension: it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions, conserve primary energy, and further strengthen our collective journey towards green transition.

The EAC will proceed immediately with the implementation of the works outlined in the Agreement, with the project scheduled for completion in the spring of 2027.

This Agreement represents the second phase of the joint initiative between the EAC and the Ministry of Defence. The first phase, completed in 2022, involved the replacement of 2,200 energy-intensive lighting fixtures in National Guard camps across Cyprus, laying the foundation for the broader energy-efficiency upgrades now being implemented.

This collaboration also extends to other important projects, such as the installation of photovoltaic systems in all National Guard camps, confirming that the relationship between EAC and the Ministry of Defence is a strategic, productive, and future-oriented one.

EAC and the Ministry of Defence are implementing projects that strengthen energy security, reduce environmental impact, and serve the public interest.
